What does the $10 minimum taxi fare mean?
All taxi fares "originating" at Richmond International Airport (RIC) will be a minimum of $10 or the meter fare, whichever is higher. So, for example, if you took a cab at Richmond Airport and traveled 2 miles, your actual meter fare would be $7.50 but you would pay the minimum $10 fare. Similarly, if you traveled 10 miles, your taxi fare would be $27.50. In this case, you would pay the full meter fare of $27.50. Please note that the minimum Richmond Airport taxi rates are for an airport pick-up and not for a drop-off. So, if you were going to the Airport, you would not have any minimum fare and would pay the full fare as shown on the meter.
What is the $5 Richmond Airport Access Fee?
All taxis entering the commercial lanes at Richmond Airport have to pay a $5 Richmond Airport Access fee. This fee is added to your final meter fare. You have a right to ask for the paid fee receipt. Here is an image of the Richmond Airport access fee receipt.
Do I have to pay toll fees in a taxi?
Yes. Any toll fees incurred are added to the final meter fare. So, if you passed through 2 tolls and the driver paid $2 in toll fees, he/she will add the $2 to your meter fare when the ride ends. To save time at tolls, all our taxis use the E-ZPass transponders. Toll fee rates are posted at tolls. If you need a toll receipt, your driver will use the manual cash payment toll lanes. Please let your driver know in advance if you need a receipt.
What is the extra passenger fee?
All additional passengers are charged $1 per person. So, the primary passenger is not charged any extra fee, but any additional passengers accompanying the primary rider are charged $1 per person. Here is an example,.. if you were traveling with 2 other people, the driver would add $2 for those 2 additional passengers. However, there is an exception, children below the age of 6 are not charged any extra passenger fees.
How much does a taxi in Richmond cost per mile?
Taxis in Richmond VA charge $2.50 per mile traveled. The taximeter has $0.50 increments for every 1/5th mile traveled. So, if you traveled 0.4 miles, your fare would be $1. Please note that all taxis in Richmond VA have a flag drop rate of $2.50. This means that when you travel 0.4 miles, the meter will show $3.50 instead of $1.
What is the taxi flag drop charge?
All taxis in the U.S. charge a flag drop rate. This varies by state and county jurisdictions. In the city of Richmond and the counties of Henrico, Chesterfield & Hanover, the county flag drop rate is fixed at $2.50. This is the minimum you would pay for occupying the vehicle for the first 1/5th mile. Any additional 0.2 miles are charged at $0.50.
Why does a taxi have a flag drop charge?
A taxi flag drop rate is set to compensate a taxi driver fairly. Let's look at an example. John Doe enters a taxi and decides to ride 0.1 mile. Without a flag drop charge, the meter would read $0 and the driver would get paid nothing for his time, effort and fixed expenses (gas, maintenance, property taxes, commercial insurance, licensing & permit fees etc.). A flag drop rate is set by the local jurisdictions to ensure that the taxi driver get's a predefined minimum amount for his time. So, when you take a short ride from one block to the other, your taxi driver gets paid atleast $2.50. The flag drop rate can be termed as the minimum wage/earnings for a driver for his time spent transporting a passenger.
How does the taxi wait time work?
In Richmond VA, taxis charge $0.50 per 80 seconds of wait time. This wait time calculation starts when the taxi halts or engages in idle time. Some circumstances where wait time comes into effect are;
- When your taxi stops at a red light.
- When your taxi makes a stop and waits for you.
- When your taxi is stuck in traffic and is not moving
What is an after hours surcharge?
All taxis in Richmond charge a $1 fee for travel between the hours of 9 p.m through 6 a.m. This $1 is added as an extra fee to your metered fare. The after hours surcharge is primarily charged to compensate the driver for working late hours through early morning.
